Day 6 March 3rd Tuesday, Trondheim and northwards

The King Harald passing us
Today was again bright and
Our tram at the end of journey
sunny as we sorted ourselves out ready for what the day would throw at us.  Early on we met another Hurtigruten ship "King Harald" which was making the return journey and it is a custom to greet and wave at a member of the same family and this
the frozen lake
was duly performed.  We breakfasted and then it was
a more traditional tram as well
time to get ready for our 1000 arrival at the large town of Trondheim.  I had planned to go on the northernmost tramline in the world which tracks from the city centre up into the mountains where there is a ski resort and centre.  All
icicles
good plans etc!  We had a city map but we got lost and took rather a long
view of city and cathedral
detour before we eventually found a tram stop.  I was not popular.  We had to buy tickets before boarding and just about did it with the contactless machine before a tram arrived.  The tracks were snowy but the tram was OK and we had some very good views of the city as we climbed.  It took about 20 minutes and we got out at the terminus.  We decided not to climb up a path to the ski resort/centre but had a look round and found a frozen lake with some children wandering round.

We took the next tram back, had some good views, saw some huge icicles and arrived at the terminus in the city centre where we had planned to begin the journey.  The centre was not spectacular but there was a monument to King Olav Tryggvason who it is said visited Scilly and was converted to Christianity by St Elid on St Helens and took Christianity back to Norway.  We then eventually found our way back to the boat but managed to get slightly lost during the journey.  We sailed again at 1315.  Time for lunch.  On the way along the coast we passed a lighthouse which looked like a house, we were told at one time the family of a keeper lived there with him - it did not have much of a playground for the children!

We relaxed and recovered during the afternoon before having a good salmon fish meal for dinner.  The food on the menus does not look too appetizing but we are eating local dishes which prove to be delicious.  After dinner we relaxed in the observation lounge before going to our cabin.  At about 1000 we had an alert that the northern lights had been spotted in front of the bow.  We quickly put extra clothes on, grabbed a camera and went out into the cold.  The front was packed but we just about saw a green glow but evidently some people saw much more.  Perhaps it will be next time for us.  We returned to the cabin, got warm and read a little before retiring.

  1. Good to see that you found some snow and seen the green glow. Trust it wasn't just a tease and you'll soon see the real thing. (The walk and tram-ride sounds a nice adventure; hope Christine wasn't grumpy with you for too long).
