Day24 May 13th At sea

The most significant happening overnight was that the ship's alarm went off at about midnight waking everyone up and causing concern.  The captain was soon on the PA saying that a lot of smoke/possibly a fire had been reported in one of the funnels.  No further action required by us at the time but we would be notified when further news was available.  About 20 minutes later he came on to say it was a false alarm - someone had seen a lot of smoke but this was because the smoke from the engines was blowing onto the deck.  We were able to go back to sleep.

wet, windy and cold on deck
Not much else to report.  We are at sea out of sight from land
geared up for walk on deck
as we head towards Anchorage.  It is blowing about gale force but the boat is hardly moving because she has very effective stabiliser wings.  We went to a "Ask the Captain" session this morning where he gave us some details of his history, the crew structure of the boat and how she is set up - we have 5 engines.  Of course he was asked about the alarm - it was a crew member who raised the shout and the fire team responded but soon realised that nothing unusual/worrying was going on.  Since then we have had a good walk around a deck (4 laps = 1 mile) and had some lunch.

After this we have read in our
first sight of land
cabin, made final arrangements for our tour tomorrow and been to a worship service led by a former US army chaplain.  We have now sighted land as we approach Anchorage.  It is now time for dinner - a formal one as we have had all day at sea.

  1. The sea could be between Lands End & Scilly .... just like home, but not nice if you had to abandon ship in your jim-jams. :( :(
