Day 13 Napier

First of all another picture from yesterday – this is what a local 18 paddle gig looks like.  They tell me they might compete in next year’s world championship!

Today again has not been very good weather as we have moved base from Rotorua to Napier on the east coast of North Island.  It was raining quite heavy at times and there was mist as we passed over the mountain range.  Our satnav guided us to a recommended interest place called “Huka Falls” which was 1 hour en route.  We stopped and enjoyed watching the river go through a narrow gorge.  It was quite fearsome but evidently some people kayak along this stretch.  2 hours further on and the satnav brought us to our destination – how did we live without technology?  We have now left behind the geothermal area but not the total
earthquake scene as Napier was
completely flattened in 1931.  It was
rebuilt in Art Deco style and hopefully
we may get some pics if the weather
is better tomorrow.
This is the sort hilly forest countryside we passed through today.
