Day 23 Fox Glacier

Last night we stayed in a lodge near Hokitika and it had a wonderful outlook.  We woke up to views of a river valley with mist above it and in the distance were hills with the tops covered in cloud.

We breakfasted and decided to slowly make our way to Fox Glacier (we are going glacier walking tomorrow).  The weather was partly cloudy and dry and so we made good progress.
Our first short break was at Lake Ianthe which the road skirts on its route south.  Quite a large pretty lake in the middle of nowhere.

Our main stop was at Okarito lagoon.  We had a walk round then went on quite a steep walk to a viewing platform which gave a 360 degree panorama of the area.  We had some coffee then resumed our route south.  At one point we found a farmer herding cows along State Highway 6!  For the Savills I include a photo of some bikers of which we have seen many, the roads (few vehicles and good surfaces), warm climate and bendy nature of some of the roads make it ideal for biking.

  2. Thanks for making us Savills even more jealous ... looks like a great place for a bit of cruisin', and a good alternative to Route 66. (Not sure about the mix of bovine & bike tho). Keep on blogging. Val & Brenda XX.
