Day 18 Kaikoura

Another brilliant day - blue skies, 26 degrees, wall to wall sunshine – but perhaps a little more breeze today but not too much to worry us.  Going back a day or two, our informative boat captain yesterday explained that Captain Cook named part of the local waterway in 1770 after Queen Charlotte the wife of George III.  Today we breakfasted and left Jayne and Bill’s (Radfield House) lovely home in Blenheim just after 0900.  We went to the centre of Blenheim, had a quick look and sit before attending morning service at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church.  We were made very welcome in true NZ fashion and felt uplifted after the hour’s service.  We then drove the 80 mile journey to Kaikoura down the east coast of this island.  We had a short break after an hour for a drink and the last of Jayne’s delicious muffins.

We then arrived and checked in at the motel in Kaikoura where we are staying the next two nights.  Tomorrow we are going on a whale watching trip from here and so we walked into the village to establish where we need to be for the trip and then had a look round the few shops.  We overlook the beach and the video shows the scenery we look out onto – we are between mountains and the sea.  We came back and had a cup of necessary tea and later on we had a meal.  We had read about a seal colony being on some rocks at Kean Point near here and so after we had eaten we drove up to the point and found some seals resting fairly near the road and we took some pictures of the posers!

This one has a gull and a heron type bird for company!
